Production of sand during oil production causes severe operational problem for oil producers. Every year the petroleum industry spends millions of dollars in sand  As of 2007, the oil sands industry used about 4% of the Western Canada Sedimentary Basin natural gas

Sand Production is the initiative of various problems related to the oil and gas industry that adversely affect the completion process. The problems caused by Sand Production include: Failure of the sand control completions. Plugging of the perforations. Borehole instability. Environmental effects. The migration of formation sand caused by the flow of reservoir fluids. The production of sand is generally undesirable since it can restrict productivity, erode completion components, impede wellbore access, interfere with the operation of downhole equipment, and present significant disposal difficulties. Sand Production. Sand production is a function of (1) the absence of clay minerals and cementation materials, (2) the viscosity of the oil, (3) the producing water cut and GOR, and (4) the rate of pressure drawdown (Chugh et al., 2000). Sand and fine produced with oil and gas can cause erosion and wear of production facilities/equipments, resulting in production downtime, expensive repairs, and potentially loss of containment (serious safety risk). Low viscosity fluids, such as gas, experience smaller drawdowns, as opposed to the drawdown that would be associated with a 1,000-cp fluid produced from the same interval. Hence, higher sand production is usually associated with viscous fluids. The areas of oil and gas production field that face the sand production issue currently are U.S Gulf Coast, the North Sea, China, Canada, California, Venezuela, Western Africa, Indonesia and Malaysia. As shown in Fig. 1, sand control technology is installed by the company, Schlumberger in over 30 countries globally. These formations are usually geologically young (Tertiary age) and shallow, and they have little or no natural cementation. Sand production is unwanted because it can plug wells, erode equipment, and reduce well productivity. It also has no economic value. Nonetheless, formation sand production from wells is dealt with daily on a global basis.
