Oil service classification

The API cautions that any oil with a classification of SE should not be used in engines built after 1979. Furthermore, the SG classification cannot be used in engines made before 1993. The recommended correct oil to use for all gasoline engines, in any year, is the classification SM. For engines made 2001 and before, classification SJ is In the United States, engine oil ratings are indicated by a trademarked circular design on the package. The mark contains three pieces of information. In the inner circle is a viscosity grade. In the upper part of the outer circle is an API Service Classification, and the bottom of the outer circle may contain an energy conservation rating.

The service rating of passenger car and commercial automotive motor oils is classified by the American Petroleum Institute (API). The program certifies that an oil meets certain Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) quality and performance standards. The service rating is shown in the API "Service Symbol Donut" on the product label. The current and previous API Service Categories are listed below. Vehicle owners should refer to their owner's manuals before consulting these charts. Oils may have more than one performance level. For automotive gasoline engines, the latest engine oil service category includes the performance properties of each earlier category. In order to address the changing service and lubrication requirements of modern automobiles, and to allow effective communication among engine manufacturers, the oil industry and consumers, the API Engine Service Classification System (ESCS) was established in 1970. Motor oil or engine oil is also rated on how well it holds up under severe service conditions in the engine. The API service rating is an oil rating system that specifies how well an oil performs under severe engine service. The American Petroleum Institute (API) service ratings are related to automobile warranty standards.
