Apprenticeship training classes at Vancouver Island University fill on a first come first registered basis, with waiting lists established in many trades and levels. To achieve journeyperson status, graduates of the certificate program must find employment as an apprentice in one of the four trades and complete an apprenticeship to be eligible to write the Interprovincial Exam to become a certified Heavy Duty Equipment Technician, Truck Transport Mechanic, Transport Trailer Technician or Diesel Engine Mechanic. Must meet VIU's General Admission Requirements for Academic Programs. International students must meet VIU's International Student English Language Requirements for Graduate Programs . An acceptable undergraduate or graduate degree in business and a "C+" graduating grade point average from a recognized university, or VIU's Graduate Certificate in Business (GCIB).

This full-time program is built upon the program outline developed collaboratively by industry and VIU, and follows the BC Provincial Apprenticeship Level 1 program competencies. The program focuses on basic carpentry skills and framing.

The trades programs that are held at this location are Carpentry, Hairstylist, Refrigeration & Air Conditioning, VIU Cowichan Trades Centre, Carpentry Program. VIU's Carpentry course provides the training needed to enter the trade in an 8- month carpentry apprenticeship program that combines theoretical framework with

Martin Barnett, Chair of VIU’s Professional Baking and Pastry Arts program, is excited about the new option that gives Red Seal holders transfer credits towards academic programs at VIU – so much so that he’s taking advantage of it himself to obtain his Bachelor of Arts. Apprentices work as apprentice carpenters and come to VIU for 7 weeks each year for technical training.
